Reef-mania blog problem has solved~!!

Hi all~~

My Reef-mania blog (www.reef-mania.com) problem has solved, changing the server from

EUC-kr to UTF-8. But Unfortunatly I lost some data of my post.

I will plan to fix and modify the damaged data step by step~!!

Schooling and Shoaling in fish behavior

Many people ask in RC forum about schooling fish like " I'd like to have a school in it in my tank,
What's a good schooling fish? " and many people answered anthias, green chromis, cardinalsdo. but Some people say that these fishes are not schooling but shoaling!!I think I need to summarize the term schooling and shoaling.

Here is definition of schooling and shoaling

1. School. A group of fish that swim in a
synchronised manner, i.e. with similar speeds and direction. They also display a
consistent Nearest Neighbour Distance (NND), which means they maintain the same
distance between all immediately adjacent fish.
2. Shoal. Fish which are randomly
orientated within a group and exhibit a variable NND. Shoals of fish on the move
nearly always form schools.

clown fish do not school or shoal. In the wild they will group with a male and female sexually differentiated pair and 3 to 6 sexually undifferentiated individuals around an anemone. By the way, this is called association; the anemone hosts clown fish, the clown fish associate with the anemone.

Some butterfly fish will also shoal although none will school. Some of the fish that I have seen school are: barracuda, jacks, silver sides but schooling behavior in normal aquaria is not going to happen for a variety of reasons. Some of the fish I have seen shoal in an aquarium are some varieties of cardinal fish, yellow zoster butterfly, and some chromis and some anthias. I have heard that some tangs will shoal but have no personal experience observing this in aquaria. I have seen this in the wild many times but it depends on the species.

Most of the reason that fish school if for protection from predators, and in an aquarium that usually isn't the case.

Barracuda and Jacks are also schooling.

INTERZOO 2008 Elos Release

Jesse of Elos USA snapped these photos of the new Elos System Mini and e-lite LED clamp on pendent. While we do like the slim nature and choice of materials…we have doubts regarding the intensity of the e-lite; certainly looking forward to PAR tests. We also like the all white pedestal stand… but we’ll gladly stick with ours.
Overall it’s a nice system, but looking at the pictures it appears to just be a smaller System 70. The Cube shape and e-lite are very nice, but we were hoping for a bit more ingenuity in the tank, stand, sump area. It’s nice, very nice. But when I use nice so many times to describe an item, it shows just that… it’s nice.

Then again it’s not always best to change certain elements… MSRP on the “limited edition models” should be ~$1600-2000 (e-lite included). More info on pricing will be available soon.
To go along with the e-lite, Elos made the e-power. Looking at the individual units I am liking them. Simple aluminum round pendent…. The parabolic half-sphere shape blends form and function. Job well done.
But then they went ahead and added something else, The Bracket… The Bracket that reminds me of a die-cast Star Wars model my neighbor Timmy had when I was growing up. While I do like the fact is has a place for a supplemental LED e-lite, we are really not digging the entire unit. In this case the individual parts are much greater than the sum, or should we say space ship?

Joking aside, we must give Elos much credit for creating a modular lighting system; especially one that integrates directable Metal Halide pendents and LEDs. If it can perform, it is still a much more attractive option than others currently available.

We have a feeling Elos had one of, if not the nicest booth displays
